Newsletter #60 – August 2023
2023 Annual General Meeting – Monday 28 August
Top of mind for the THS executive this month is the AGM. All members are welcome to attend, and we would love to see you there.
Your attendance does not mean that you will be given a task, put on a committee, or asked for more money. It is an opportunity to learn more about our plans and aspirations for fulfilling our aims of promoting and advocating for the history of the place we (well most of us) call home. We on the committee would welcome questions and ideas from the floor of the meeting, in fact at any time during the year.
We are grateful to have welcomed Michelle Calitz as our new Treasurer – designate. She and our retiring Treasurer, Bill Hinkley, have worked together to ensure that there is a smooth transition from one to the other. Michelle and her family moved to the area in 2019 from South Africa. Michelle has experience in the corporate worlds of both South Africa and New Zealand.
We will also be announcing a new patron for the society, replacing Bruce Murray who died in January.
Deceased members
Over the past few months several long-standing and active members of the society have died. Apart from Bruce, committee-member Gilbert (Gil) Roper died in March, former committee-member and foundation member David Wood died in Auckland (where he had lived for about 12 years) in July, and Don Shanks died in February. We would like to acknowledge their contributions to the Tawa Historical Society in various ways over the years.
Wellington Heritage Fortnight – October/November 2023
The Tawa Historical Society will again be participating in the Wellington Heritage event running from Labour Weekend until Sunday 5 November. Our participation will be on Saturday 4 November and will be a repeat of the talk and walk held last year. All readers of this newsletter are encouraged to view the event’s website (www.wellingtonheritageweek.co.nz) and participate in the myriad of events to be held over the fortnight in the greater Wellington area.
Spring into Tawa – 28 October 2023
The Society will again (I’m afraid to say – weather-permitting!) have a stand at the ‘Spring into Tawa’ event on Saturday 28 October. We will have copies of all our in-print publications for sale. I am tempted to suggest that we also produce a THS-branded umbrella based on the somewhat damp history of the event, but let’s think positively!
